We started firmly in the purée camp, mostly out of anxiety about choking, and ended up doing a hybrid without ever deciding to. Baby-led weaning or purées? The evidence doesn't say you have to pick. What raises choking risk is food shape, size, and supervision. Not the method. Both approaches follow the same allergen-introduction timeline. The app doesn't care which one you use. A meal is a meal. Log it either way.

Questions parents ask
Can you combine BLW and normal baby food?
Yes, you can combine baby-led weaning and normal spoon-fed baby food, and plenty of families do. Most families we know ended up mixing both without planning to, and we started with purees and drifted into a hybrid ourselves. The debate online is louder than the actual difference in outcomes, so pick whichever approach reduces your own stress at mealtimes rather than what one camp insists is correct.

What are the benefits of spoon feeding purees?
Spoon feeding purees makes it easier to see exactly how much your baby ate, which helps if you are anxious about intake. Some parents feel more in control of pace and portion early on. Purees can be a gentler entry point when choking anxiety is high, and they are more familiar to older-generation caregivers, which matters if daycare or grandparents will be feeding your baby too.
What are the benefits of baby-led weaning?
With baby-led weaning, babies practise chewing and self-feeding from the very first meal. Food can look closer to what the rest of the family already eats, which means less separate prep for some families. There is some evidence, not conclusive, that baby-led weaning may support easier texture acceptance and less fussy eating later, although puree-fed babies who move on to lumps and finger foods on a reasonable timeline generally catch up fine.
Does baby-led weaning change when you introduce allergens?
No, baby-led weaning and spoon-feeding purees are both compatible with introducing the same allergens on the same timeline. The feeding method changes how food is served, not which allergens are offered or when. Whichever approach you choose, follow the allergen plan you have agreed with your paediatrician, and read up on choking hazards too, because food shape, size and supervision matter regardless of method.
